Decaffeination is the act of removing caffeine from coffee beans and tea leaves.
All decaffeination processes are performed on unroasted coffee beans (green), but the methods vary somewhat. It generally starts steaming beans. They are then rinsed in a solvent that contains as much of the chemical composition of coffee as possible without also containing the caffeine in a soluble form. The process is repeated 8 to 12 times until it meets either the international standard of having removed 97% of the caffeine in coffee beans or the EU standard of having grains 99.9 % caffeine free by mass. Coffee contains over 400 chemicals important to the taste and aroma of the final drink, which effectively means that no chemical reaction will remove only caffeine while leaving the other chemicals to their original concentration. Some well as the taste of coffee, but could do without the caffeine. I've heard of people are allergic to caffeine, but loves coffee.
It is chemically altered during processing to extract the caffeine. A convenience store has a variety of hot coffee, you can get, including that which is twice the caffeine is for people who need an extra kick to Longside Haid of the morning to bet their butts moving.
I'd be skeptical of anything that is impregnated with chemicals to eliminate caffiene, you might as well put it all out and drink the right chemicals.
