Why water and ice from my refrigerator GE Profile mold odors and bad tastes? I have a GE Profile Performance fridge with a built in filtration system of water and ice. I had this fridge for years. Suddenly, the ice and the water tastes like metal and the smell of mold. I replaced the filter twice, without success.
Fill the filter with bleach and run it through your system and then rinsed in running water through the system and repeat if necessary.
You may have to change the water pipes from the filter to the distributor. Mold can grow in rows after the filter and no matter what you do its going to be there, you have waited too long to change the filter more or less .. but fear not, you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get the water line by the feet for 12 cents ... :) You should not be an expert its a bit easier:)
Sounds like it could be the waterline, but I would say the MFG. and see what they say. In the meantime, I found a very good product that has helped somewhat with my ice maker ice. Proved that the bad taste and the smell was really coming from one side refrigerator.
So here's my suggestion which is what I did and wow - it works really well! ... and safe and totally fragrance free. Pick a couple of IT-enabled refrigerator odor absorbers of carbon - charcoal filter bit purple - not imitations. costs $ 2 - $ 3 each and put a couple in the fridge and freezer. Completely odorless, it actually removes odors instead of covering with an unpleasant odor and totally secure.
I used these for worst smells including ice tastes bad, my bedding, spoiled fish in the car and for closets, fridge etc. They are fantastic> No spills or chemicals to worry about. You can buy these kitchen accessories in stores or just go direct which is what I do - contact them and ask customerservice@innofresh.com the order form. You get it immediately.
Can also buy at Starcrest catalog (web). Definitely the way forward. Try it. Nothing to lose.
Good luck
